Italian Language Community Hub
A Cross-Continental Digital Space for Immersive Language Learning
Designed a unified, immersive digital community to support language acquisition across NYU’s New York and Florence campuses. By integrating cultural content, real-time interaction, and student-driven engagement into a single platform, the initiative transformed fragmented digital tools into a connected learning ecosystem that strengthened participation, cultural immersion, and cross-campus collaboration.
Context
-
Language acquisition is inherently experiential requiring immersion, cultural context, and real-time communication. These elements are difficult to replicate in traditional online learning environments.
-
NYU’s Italian program operated across both New York and Florence campuses, creating a need for a shared digital space that could sustain community, cultural connection, and ongoing language practice. Existing tools were fragmented, limiting interaction and continuity.
-
The opportunity was to design a centralized community hub that would unify these experiences and enable students to feel both linguistically and culturally connected, regardless of location.
Objective
To create a cross-campus digital environment that supports immersive, community-driven language learning through cultural engagement, real-time interaction, and integrated academic alignment.
Strategy & Approach
The design followed a community-first, immersion-driven model, grounded in:
-
Experiential Learning Theory (Kolb)
-
Communicative Language Teaching (Hymes, Canale)
-
Community of Inquiry Framework (Garrison, Anderson, Archer)
-
Sociocultural Theory (Vygotsky)
-
Cultural Immersion Theory
The approach emphasized:
-
Designing for active participation over passive consumption
-
Embedding real-time communication and collaboration
-
Integrating cultural context as a core learning driver
-
Creating a shared digital space bridging geographic boundaries
Execution
-
Curated 360° interactive cultural experiences with live response functionality
-
Enabled student-led posts supporting Zoom sessions, reading groups, film screenings, and speaking practice
-
Integrated virtual museum tours, native speaker videos, Italian-themed playlists, and student-generated content
-
Selected a platform supporting modern design, accessibility, plugin compatibility, and Google Groups integration
-
Ensured seamless LMS connectivity to align community engagement with course activities
Anticipated Risks & Mitigation Strategy
-
Passive Content Consumption
→ Mitigated by designing for required student contribution and peer interaction -
Platform Fragmentation
→ Mitigated by consolidating tools into a single integrated platform -
Cross-Campus Cultural Drift
→ Mitigated by enabling shared, real-time experiences across NY and Florence -
Accessibility Barriers
→ Mitigated through platform testing for font support, plugins, and simplified design

Leadership Takeaway
The most effective language learning environments are not built around instruction alone, they are built around experience.
Creating spaces where learners can actively engage with culture, community, and communication transforms language from something studied into something lived.
